Letter #9 Los Platinos

Hola Hola!!!

Sounds like you guys are having an bakan Easter riding and having fun like always. I hope everyone decides to go on a ride together that's always been my favorite thing about our family is our traditions. I cannot believe em and Brent our having a boy that soooo weird but super rad too!! ahhh tell them congrats for me i can´t wait to see pictures and they found out way fast i feel like but still so fun!

As for me this week was pretty crazy, we had dinner one night with a these members in the ward, but they are from Tahiti the hermano doesn't want to learn Spanish (yet he´s lived here for 3 years) so he only speaks french and Tahitian, his wife speaks Ingles, Spanish, Tahitian and French so we're sitting in their house eating dinner speaking 4 different languages. It was a pretty neat experience for me because even though not all of us understood each other, we were all able to laugh and have a great time. also we had almuerzo with a family named the Manzzinis they are Italiano, lots of Italiano descendants here, but they are such a cute little family and they have not very much.  There house is probably the size of my bedroom, but yet they are just the sweetest ever.  The church is most important to them.  They make me think that's how you and dad were at first.

Ok... so Maria, I dunno if you remember her, but she was an old investigator that has had all the lessons but fell away 2 days before baptism. Rumors are because of women in the ward... but ya, so this was 2 years ago this happened. So last week me and hna.Valeriano went to visit and she was like, I'm just leaving, ciao. Well, after hna. val was like, well, she´s over it.. ya. but this last Wednesday I was like, let's just try again. Well, she let us in this time but the conversation was dull. She was just trying to make us happy bla bla...so we're sitting there talking and all of a sudden I have this thought (oh she has 2 sons btw, one 12 and one 6) I thought oh I have some nitro stickers in my back pack, then I thought, oh no that's stupid. I just kept thinking about it so finally I was like, do you guys like stickers, they were like ah ya, whatever so I pulled them out and they were like, what does this mean?  I didn´t know how to explain so I said, youtube it.  The boy quickly pulls out his phone and looks it up and he FREAKED out, I mean freaking out, oh my gosh! So freakin bakan may en canta!! I explained, oh that's my dad's job, they stared at me and all at once said, your dad's a member??? Happily I replied, yes of course, the whole conversation after that changed. Dad, you have no idea how much your hard work has payed off in so many way you would have never thought. After that 2 other families found out (my comp. freaked out and now tells everyone, she loves it!) and first question is always your dad's a member? Your whole family are members? In that moment I can see something change in there eyes. I don't really don't know how to explain.  Even people half way across the world you don't even know. Well done Papa!!!

As for Carmen still working... she wouldn´t let us into her house last Monday because of Elsa yet again, but were working with her. We're going to still, and get a seata with her this week. Elsa is so frustrating but I know that in time things will work out, we just need pacients.

Rad news about the mission. we are getting 15 new hermanas next change, and only 3 elders.  There are going to be so many hermanas that they will be in 3´s. By July there will be 50 hermanas in Santiago east and they are opening 2 more stakes which is huge. And hermanas maybe can be leaders de zona now too... crazy huh!! freakin rad. and the President said learning slow is not an option!  Ahhh scary! but the lords work yet again!  oh, also interesting I'm the only gringa (white girl) that has been in Los Platanos apparently...it's super dangerous and ghetto i love that!!!

Everything is soo good here!! I'm starting to understand most things and trying really hard to talk. I can feel your prayers so thank you!

As for Kyn in Africa I am so pumped for her!! When I read her email, I felt like I was there again! I felt like she said a lot of the same things I said but it so different when you experience it! ah so fun!  I'm so so stoked for her, sounds like a life changing experience!! BAKAN!!!  (Chilean for COOL!) Well thanks my week I'm so glad everything is going well with you guys i love you all so so much and am always always praying for you!!

Con mucho amor,
your chikito missionary

Week #8 Los Platinos

Hola familia,
I officailly hit my 2 month mark crazy crazy... time goes so slow but yet so fast. But ya ahhhh i cant believe you guys got a dog... well yes i can but awwww she´s is so freakin cute!!! i love that you named her luna... in spanish that means moon. Just the other night when we were walking home is when i learned that word. The moon was so beautiful. I made me think how can people believe there is not a God.  The littlest things here in the world are a testiment of him.  So story number one:  we started teaching this guy, Juan...well, kinda.  He´s an ex-millitary man from Argentina that is now a drunk that sits on the side of the road every day.  We decided one day to stop and talk to him.   He´s really sweet but never sober, so we cant really teach him untill he is sober.  But yet we visit him everyday.  The other night I heard a ton of gun shots like a machine gun, and was like, what the???... and come to find out the next day it was one of Juan's friends that was killed.  That was kinda sad.  Juan was all beat up and had a huge gash in his head. So, ya... that was interesting.  Second story was again with Elsa, the inactive member.  We went back to visit Carmen, the nanny at Elsa's house and Elsa is seriously crazy.  We sit down and start to explain the restoration.  I start out and get one sentence out, and we dont speak the rest of the time.  Elsa starts telling Carmen that she´s a bad mom, and all the things she does wrong.  It was awful and the spirit flew out of there so fast.  After, we finally got out of there, and Carmen walked us to the gate.  She said, "I dont know if i want to be a part of you church if there are bad people like her in it."  Aw, shoot! I thought.  We starting talking a little more, and low and behold we come to find out she lives in our sector.  So freakin random!  Nanas never live close to where they work. so that was a miricale in itself.  We are actually going to go teach her right after I'm done emailing, so wish us luck!! I really hope things work out, especially for my companion, Hermana Valeriano... this is her convert!!  As for the rest of the week it was good. lots of walking and knocking and just trying to find people to teach!! Our area is really ghetto for Hermanas.  They call it here in chile "flihte" (flight-eh). so ya.  That's it really for me.  Just lots of work going on here. Spanish is coming!  I can understand most of what's going on when gringa´s  talk.  Still working on Lattins but I know it will come.  It's weird cause i wonder sometimes if i should be freaking out more about the language cause i´m not good at it, but then i think im just trying to be patient and there is no reason to stress yourself out. i did get your letters like 2 days ago so they are kinda late, it takes so long to get things here but still fun to get letters!!

So glad to hear Kyn made it safe she is going to have such a fun time i know it! dont be worried she has the worlds best traveler with her grams goodie so all is well haha! but ya so weird that i´m all the way in Chile and Kyns in Africa. I hope things are going good with Dad's work.  I know with all my heart that the Lord will make things happen how they should for you guys!  Just like he did with Carmen and Elsa!! God knows all things before they even happen, and the bigger picture of things we just need to be patient and it is so hard because it feels like it been such a long time but just at that last moment when you want to give up that is when miracles happen!!! i know that with all my heart and i love you guys so much!!!

Well I hope you all have a good week love you all so much!!!
Con mucho amor,
your lil missionary !!

Letter #7 Los Platinos

Well Hola familia once again from Chile,
First, I want to apologize for my writing and how bad it is and spelling everything is just blurring together and we only have so long to write so pressure. hahaha i love that you hacked into my email to get my letter, haha i sent it I'm not sure what happened, the computers really suck here your pictures also are only thumb nails so ya sorry. sounds like you guys had a lots of fun in steamboat. I'm so glad you decided to go! i laughed so hard when dad said you ran into a naked fat guy's man parts. ahahaha classic! As for here week two and well its been well a week in Chile, as for the language i can kinda kinda start to get an idea of what people are saying but they have to speak really slowly, honestly when we walk down the streets here in los platanos i just think someone should make a movie about this it comical. using hand gestures for everything, oh its just the best i´ve really just learned to laugh at everything. when we are talking to people and stuff they´ll say intende...  and i´ll have this huge smile on my face ...no and they just laugh and keep talking. Its fun!! we finally taught our first lesson this week.. it is so so hard to find people here btw we tocar (knock) all the time and our mish. pres. said knocking is pointless that we should focus on refrencias and that's hard to cause all the refrencies we get are not in our sector. So we went to visit a menos activo (we do that a lot here) and we ended up teaching her nana (nurse) her husband beat here she has 4 kids and she doesn´t believe in god. It was so sad we were all bawling. then the menos activo Elsa starts yelling at her "why don´t you believe in god" "why are you doubting" why this why that... it really wasn´t good so that was kinda hard but we are going to teach her again this week so wish us luck. we found another investigator a mom with 2 kids her old records are crazy shes been taught every lesson she had a date went to church everyday... so we were like what happened. well a lady in ward told her she couldn´t take the sacrament and had to pay tithing so guess she got offended so hopefully we can help her to understand. So fingers crossed.
has for the people here love em! so incredible we are kinda in the outskirts of Santiago. we actually went into the city today to Santa Lucia, that was fun. but ya really pretty poor area we are in they call it here "fligte" meaning ghetto. so it fun i like it. oh interesting story so i had my gold necklace on the one from allies wedding and the sailboat me and Kyn got in Cali and this little boy came up to me and was pointing at it saying something and i thought he was talking about my skin so i was like ya ya blanco. i watched the little boys eyes widen keep in mind hes like 7, my companion goes oh no no its not real right. oh ya ya its fake i said he just stared at me, so after i was like should i take this off and my comp was like no no your fine. so after that we went a visited these two way old ladies gaby y juana and they were evangelic. oh and here everyone has big tall fences in front of the house so how you like knock on the door i guess you could say, it by yelling ellllooooo... super loud. but ya anyways they were like take that off people we literally slit your neck to get that... so ya that was kinda scary. but i seriously stick out like a sore thumb here.. guys like kiss at you and stuff here its soo weird. oh another story kinda spooky me and my comp we talking to these old ladies at there door and we just talking and talking (we´ll my comps talking I'm trying to decifer)haha but all the sudden i hear this mumbling behind me i look back and i was seriously the freakiest looking person i have ever seen in my life, they were just staring blankly ahead of us mumbling very softly.. it was seriously satanic.. i thought it was Satan. ahhh it scared me so bad.
Oh and they other day also we were walking down the street and there were 3 caskets just sitting in the back of some persons car i asked this girl from the ward if they were real people in em and she was like ya. where in the hell am I!! hahaha always something exciting going on here. haha

but ya sounds like all is good at home. i can´t believe kyn leaves Friday is Lindsey going? she is going to have so so much fun! I'm so stoked for her! i looked up the blog looks good your one of those crazy mums haha i´m OK with that tho!! haha that last picture you put on is so ugly tho you should maybe take that off!! haha.  They say packages take about a month so ya. that would be fantastico!!

Well i love you so much mummsie!! i´m glad you had a good week good luck sending kyn off and tell her to write me. email. i haven´t gotten any letters so emails maybe best. but ya con mucho mucho amor,

te amo,
your lil missionary

Funny Story...

So, I didn't get Meghan's email today...and I was dying because she had sent pictures and I knew she had sent a letter as well, but I didn't get it, probably because of Chilean internet... So I realized I could hack her myldsmail account because I had her password!  So that is the story of how I got the letter this week!  -- Shelley

Letter #6 Los Platonos

Well wow,
I don't even know where to start, ok so getting of the plane there were like a billion of us are mission presidents picked us up and us two Hermanas got to ride with the President and his wife, so that was fun. There are crazy drivers here and the roads here switch directions at different times of the day so it was weird, we got lost!!  haha. then we went to capilla (church) and talked bla bla bla.  I was so tired.  Then finally they gave us our new companions and right before that Elder Sheifield, Bloxham and Close were like,  "Godfrey, your gonna get a Latina that speaks absolutely no English...   Then I was told, "Hermana Godfrey, you're with Hermana Valeriano."  I look up and sure enough, she's a Latina, she goes, "En serio (seriously) I don't speak English"... and i was like, "I don't speak Spanish." Everyone just died laughing. I'm not even joking, everyone was like about ready to wet their pants. So that was fun. Then right after we went to some member's home in our sector "Los Platonos" and all i got was "blagjakajgjljsblkjslakjhglkjslkrdjskldjakfjhjlksj........."  then I was trying so hard to stay awake. It had been 42 hours of no sleep by then. Gosh, then the first night in the pinch, well my head hit the pillow and I was out. The first few days getting up at 7:30 was so hard, but now my body just does it.  I don't even use an alarm.  Um, so our area is so so, so freakin small, it's like our neighborhood from the church to half the masters. It is so so small.  So, we knock and knock and get laughed at and then visit lots and lots of inactive members that know the church is true, but are very lazy, and ya. Both me and me Hermana are new in this sector (area) so it is just trying to find people right now. It's crazy because I have really fallen in love with the people here, all of them are just so so amazing and, ah! I just love em.. and I can barely talk to them so that's a good thing right?  haha.  Oh, they feed us so much here! lots of watermelon and its not just a slice, it's like half a watermelon, no joke. There are two other Hermanas in our pinchen.  I really don't remember there names, so sorry, but they kinda kinda speak a little English so that's really nice, but they kinda get offended when you speak English so we don't speak much.. its so hard but good right!! haha.  Me and my comp. will seriously spend all day trying to figure out what the other one is saying so in totality, we probably say 15 sentences a day to each other... it's way funny.  Although it's hard learning the language, and i just want it to come now, it really has been good because I have turned to my Heavenly Father... he speaks English so its great. So were like best amigos now. I have really come to just rely on him.  I´ve done absolutely all I can so hopefully he´ll help with the rest.  Well, I know he will.  Some funny things I´ve said, the first day this guy was like stalking us in the grocery store, and well, I have no clue what is even going on and he comes up to me and says some thing in Spanish and I'm like "Si," and my Hermana is like,"no no no no!!" .. eventually I came to find out he asked if i would be his polola (chilean word Girlfriend) ahaha so that was pretty funny.  The girls in the pinch always laugh at me the gringa!! haha it's fun.  I´m totally making a fool of my self and i love it. Oh ya on Sunday I had to bare my testimony in Sacrament and I meant to say, "I know God is our loving Heavenly Father," and I said,  "I know God is our lunch father.." the two elder were laughing way hard and I didn´t even know i said that till after... ahhhh so great. so Its been so so so freaking difficult, fun, exhausting, different, hot, exciting, hard. all of the above it is a roller coaster of emotions. but its so great!!

Oh mummies, it really was the best hearing from you all on the phone! I felt like such  baby, I was crying every 10 seconds, but you guys really mean the world to me!! One thing I´ve definitely learned is families are the most important thing is this life and i was blessed with the absolute best family ever. I love Kyns dress it really is so BEAUTIFUL!! You did such a great job. Sounds like everyone is just doing so good as always and Tuggie... oh i still am so sad lulu is gone!! Poor thing. There are so many flippin dogs here its ridiculous watch out where you step. as for mail dear elders i only get on Tuesdays i believe so lets maybe just to emails. Mail? I have no clue honestly i don't really know much I just follow my comp like a little puppy. hahaha and she doesn´t speak English so i just do what she says so i dunno... haha oh mum we live at the pinchens (apartments) right across the freeway from liders (chileano walmart) I dunno if you know where that is and the map you gave me it is in a different sector, so we're not allowed there until changes, so maybe next change. anyways every ones sounds good sounds like dad, Chan had fun! and i can´t believe Kyn is leaving for Africa ohhh she´s gonna have so much fun!! I'm jealous have here forward her emails to me. P day are on Monday here and i think its only a 4 hour difference. as for a package i dunno I'm really just adapting to the things they do here so nothing i like absolutely need. Oh have kyn maybe make me a cd of music por vavor. les mis...any good instrumental..(she knows) and EFY stuff! That would be great. just what ever i dunno american stuff. haha oh they eat the weirdest stuff here and i honestly am not the biggest fan. the meat is great and the rice but they do weird stuff sometimes one dish we had was like green looking fish, eggs, mash potatoes and corn... so nasty but we have to eat it all... bla. oh it so great. oh and they have the Chilean specialty called ass so everyone is always like oh lets go get some ass. hahah its funny. and i have yet to try and empanada!! but ya i dunno
mummsie, I love you so much and you have to idea how very very grateful i am for you and dad and all you do for me!!! thanks so much!! I hope you guys have a spectacular week, I love how you said days just kinda blur together and every once in awhile something exciting happens that's so true. Well love and miss you so so much and always always praying for you!! Thanks so much also for praying for me and fasting and putting my name in the temple i can really feel it and it helps so much.
Con amor mucho, from the lands of Chile!!!
Your lil missionary
Hermana Megs Godfrey

PS you need to ask me things about Chile you saw and did so we can talk about it.
